The Invisible Campaign
Aerial mining by RAF Bomber Command was a vital part of the Allied war effort - claiming far more tonnage of Axis shipping destroyed than direct attack by either Coastal or Bomber Command itself.Minelaying operations commenced in April 1940 and expanded dramatically as the war progressed, yet today this vital campaign and its wide-ranging achievements against Axis merchant vessels, Kriegsmarine ships and U-boats are virtually unknown. The Invisible Campaign, based on Air Ministry and Admiralty archival material, together with squadron records, veteran accounts and logbooks as well as contemporary publications and press releases, provides the most detailed account of Bomber Command’s minelaying operations and their effects ever written. Historian Jane Gulliford Lowes looks at the aims of the campaign and how it was implemented, together with the measure of its success and how it compared against the mining operations implemented by the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine. The role of Arthur ‘Bomber’ Harris in overseeing minelaying operations is assessed and the experiences of the men who delivered the campaign, particularly the hazards they faced, are explored. Featuring a foreword by renowned historian James Holland, The Invisible Campaign - Bomber Command Gardening Operations 1940-1945 sheds new light on a little-discussed but important and ultimately highly successful aspect of Bomber Command and is a must-read for anyone interested the RAF’s in wartime bombing operations.

The Sicily Campaign
The Allied effort to secure the Italian island of Sicily followed hard on the heels of the North African Campaign, when an Anglo-American force had finally hemmed the Axis forces into Tunisia, where they were obliged to surrender on 13 May 1943, with over a quarter of a million German and Italian troops going into captivity. Now, intending to open the sea lanes across the Mediterranean for the first time since 1940, to dilute German strength in the theatre and knock Italy out of the war, the Allies invaded Sicily on the night of 9-10 July 1943. After just eight weeks planning and preparation, sea and airborne landings were made on the southern and south-eastern faces of the island. The campaign that followed included a further British airborne landing in mid-July before Axis forces were obliged to withdraw across the Straits of Messina to the Italian mainland, leaving Sicily in Allied hands. The six weeks of fighting cost the Allied forces almost 20,000 men killed, wounded and missing, while their opponents lost around 100,000 men killed, wounded and missing, with a further 123,000 prisoners, mostly Italian. The Sicily campaign was the first occasion that Allied forces successfully took the fight onto the home territory of an Axis power, and it provided the springboard for the Allied return to continental Europe for the first time since Dunkirk via the invasion of Italy proper at the beginning of September 1943. And it marked the beginning of formal Anglo-US co-operation that was to be a key feature in the success of the subsequent campaign in North-West Europe: British land forces in Sicily served under US General Dwight D.Eisenhower, with senior commanders including Montgomery and Patton, who subsequently occupied the same role in North-West Europe and Germany's final defeat.

Was the Second World War a campaign in France or a campaign in the West?
The Second World War was a campaign in the West, which included the invasion and subsequent liberation of France. The campaign in the West encompassed the broader strategic and military operations in Europe, including the Battle of France, the Battle of Britain, and the eventual Allied invasion of Normandy. The Atlanta Campaign, 1864 : Sherman's Campaign to the Outskirts of Atlanta
The campaign for Atlanta was pivotal to the outcome of the American Civil War.Roughly 190,000 men waged war across northern Georgia in a struggle that lasted 133 days.Today a national park at Kennesaw commemorates this titanic fight, and there are a surprising number of physical reminders still extant across the state. The struggle for Atlanta divides naturally into two stages. The first half of the campaign, from May to mid-July, can be defined as a war of maneuver, called by one historian the “Red Clay Minuet.” Under Joseph E.Johnston the Confederate Army of Tennessee repeatedly invited battle from strong defensive positions.Under William T. Sherman, the combined Federal armies of the Cumberland, the Tennessee, and the Ohio repeatedly avoided attacking those positions; Sherman preferring to outflank them instead.Though there were a number of sharp, bloody engagements during this phase of the campaign, the combats were limited.Only the battles of Resaca and Kennesaw Mountain could be considered general engagements.Johnston’s repeated retreats and the commensurate loss of terrain finally forced Confederate President Jefferson Davis to replace him with a more aggressive commander—John B.Hood.This work will portray the first half of the Atlanta Campaign in text and images, using both historic sketches and photographs, as well as post-war and modern images.Extant trenches, rifle pits, redoubts, shoupades, and other works, as well as the battlefields, will be covered, as well as surviving historic structures and the monuments and cemeteries that commemorate the campaign.

The Talavera Campaign 1809
Lieutenant General Sir Arthur Wellesley returned to the Peninsular in 1809 convinced that the country could be held against the French. His audacious crossing of the Duoro and speedy victory at Oporto in May, followed by the deceptively easy ejection of Marshal Soult's corps, confirmed this view, giving him the confidence to plan a campaign with General Cuesta's Army of Extremadura to advance on French-held Madrid via the Tagus Valley. From the outset relations between the two allied generals were poor, not to mention the divisions and enmity within the Spanish juntas and army.Matters only got worse once Wellesley's army entered Spain, thanks to a failure to provide supplies and missed opportunities. Finally, the French army, with King Joseph at its head, marched to confront the allies at Talavera. The fighting did not start well for the British, who were taken by surprise and had to fight hard to extricate themselves from trouble, before inexperienced staff officers and commanders mis-deployed divisions and brigades, nearly resulting in disaster for the Allies when Marshal Victor launched a night attack. The Peninsular Army still had much to learn. The following day, the French attacked again with the full force of a Napoleonic army infantry, cavalry and artillery, but the two-deep British line held and with their confidence shattered, the French withdrew. It was a hard-fought victory for the British commander, who was soon to be ennobled as the Duke of Wellington.
